Description

We had been watching the space weather in anticipation to see our first Aurora for weeks, and on this night, a strong geomagnetic storm was underway. The chances were high to see the Northern Lights, so we brewed some fresh coffee and got our gear ready. We had never shot the Northern Lights, and had not even done much night photography, but we were ready. With fresh coffee in hand, we left home around 10pm to head to Glacier National Park. Just leaving the house we were lucky enough to see the most turquoise curtain of Lady Aurora (to the naked eye!) flow across the sky for what could have only been a minute at most. We raced to Glacier in hopes we would catch a glimpse of Lady Aurora at Lake McDonald, and held our breath as the lights died down. We had so dearly hoped we would catch it again in the Park! When we arrived it was a bit surprising to see how many people were at Lake McDonald that late! This had to be a good sign! Truly only a handful of others were present, and a couple others being photographers, were kind enough to give us a few tips on how to best capture Lady Aurora with a camera. This photo is from that first Aurora chasing experience, and still one of our most memorable to date. Not only because it was our first time actually chasing, capturing and experiencing the Northern Lights, but also because of the duration, beauty, and for how loud it was!

It being our first time we did not know the Aurora was audible!?! It was as if we were in a dome and someone was tapping on the glass!

“The recorded, unamplified sounds can be similar to crackles or muffled bangs which last for only a short period of time. Other people who have heard the auroral sounds have described them as distant noise and sputter”…”Because of these different descriptions, researchers suspect that there are several mechanisms behind the formation of these auroral sounds. These sounds are so soft that one has to listen very carefully to hear them and to distinguish them from the ambient noise.” Memmott, Mark. “You Can Hear The Northern Lights, Researchers Say.” NPR July 10, 2012.
